The 33rd International Coastal Cleanup Day is approaching. This year it falls on Saturday, September 15, 2018. This global endeavor is one of the world's largest volunteer events towards the preservation of our beaches and oceans.
Our local municipality of Solidaridad officially began organizing these beach cleanups in 2011 and as with every year, this event relies heavily on volunteers. Whether you’re a Playa local or just visiting during this time, this will be a fun and rewarding activity to get involved with this local philanthropic activity for the day.
Volunteers are usually grouped in crews and cleaning duties assigned and split between the volunteers and municipal workers. Some assigned to beach cleaning duty, to remove garbage and others help with the removal of seaweed (sargasso) that remains heavy along our coast
There are two meet up points in Playa del Carmen to get assigned to a crew and help clean the local beaches and cenotes in our municipality of Solidaridad:
Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 8:00 a.m. at Punta Esmeralda (north Playa)
Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 8:00 a.m. at Playa Caribe, Playacar (south Playa)

International Coastal Cleanup began over 32 years ago, engaging communities to come together with the common goal of removing trash from the world's beaches and waterways. The Ocean Conservancy documents what's collected and creates this report, identifying the sources of litter and debris in hopes to change the behaviors that caused it in the first place.
