The Gateway to Mexico

When it comes to travel not all destinations are created equal. Word of mouth has done a lot for the Riviera Maya’s reputation as a top travel destination which explains the increasing number of travelers that will pass through Cancun International Airport.

While Cancun is the most easily recognized location in the Riviera Maya, the region boasts several notable travel destinations including Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos and Akumal. Each destination draws its own tourists for specific reasons. Tulum is known as a hippie paradise for its boutique hotels, organic cuisine and rustic lifestyle whereas Playa Del Carmen has become the central hub of the region, with a bustling nightlife scene and international cuisine offerings that give it a quintessential European vibe. Akumal is the land of sea turtles and Puerto Morelo is a quiet fishing town with one of the best preserved reefs in the region and hosts one of North America’s largest fishing tournaments.

The number of travelers that will pass through is expected to increase to over 21 million in the coming year.

Last year alone, 19 million people traveled to the Riviera Maya via Cancun airport. This was a 12 percent increase from the previous year, making Cancun the busiest point of entry by air into Mexico. The number of travelers that will pass through is expected to increase to over 21 million in the coming year. To accommodate this increase a fourth terminal is being built and it is due to be finished by the end of 2017.

Our team at Maya Luxe is located in the Riviera Maya so we may be a little biased when we say that we totally understand why people are choosing Mexico as their vacation destination. If you need some numbers free inspiration then just imagine white sand beaches and marble blue water. Add in sun to get a perfect glow, but enough of an ocean breeze to keep you comfortable. Need we say more? What about some adventures like cenote hopping, visiting a bioluminescent beach and swimming with whale sharks? We take great pride in knowing the ground we stand on once hosted a magnificent civilization and we never run out of new things to see and exciting adventures to experience.

The new Cancun airport terminal will bring in a new wave of people who will experience the Riviera Maya for the first time and plenty of returning visitors. As the rising numbers of travelers and the stories they’ll bring home with them will continue to place Mexico at the top of the best vacation destinations in the world, we’ll look forward to being your gracious hosts.
